Gantt Chart - short version

(1) A type of bar chart used in process planning and control to display planned and finished work in relation to time.

(2) The Gantt Chart is a display tool that shows the steps in the activity plan relative to a time scale. After an activity plan has been created to show when tasks need to be started and completed.

(3) Project planning tool illustrating activities vs timing.

(4) A horizontal bar chart used in project scheduling that shows the start date, end date, and duration of tasks within the project. It is sometimes used in conjunction with a network diagram.

Gantt Chart - long version

A Gantt chart is a type of bar chart that illustrates a project schedule. Gantt charts illustrate the start and finish dates of the terminal elements and summary elements of a project. Terminal elements and summary elements comprise the work breakdown structure of the project. Some Gantt charts also show the dependency (i.e., precedence network) relationships between activities.
