Stress crack - short version

External or internal cracks in a plastic ( or composite) caused by tensile stresses less than its short-term mechanical strength. The stresses which cause cracking may be present internally or externally, or they may be combinations of these stresses. Another term for this behaviour is crazing, i.e. fine cracks which may extend in a polymeric network on or under the surface of a plastic material.
