Gel coat - short version

(1) A resin applied to the surface of a mould and gelled before lay-up. The gel coat becomes an integral part of the finished laminate, and is used to improve surface finish as well as surface appearance.

(2) A term specific to composites, it refers to a quick-setting coating applied to the internal surface of a mold to provide an improved, highly glossy, protective surface finish.
